Collect Water Testing Samples

How do you collect a sample for water testing?

Most testing laboratories or services provide their own sample containers. Use these containers and carefully follow the instructions given for collecting, preserving, and handling water samples.

Some procedures require cleaning and flaming the spout of the faucet and letting the water run from an outside tap for several minutes before filling the sample containers. In most cases, the sample must arrive at the lab and be tested within twenty hours after collection or less.

Laboratories may sometimes send a trained technician to collect the sample or to analyze the sample directly in your home or at your other location. Depending upon the laboratory nearest to you, you can ask if this service is available for obtaining a more reliable sample and test results.
